CPFOL was the first Portuguese course as an Additional Language (AL) offered at UFABC, through the Language Division, initially part of the International Affairs Office, supported by the current Dean of Extension and Culture (Proec) at UFABC.
Started in 2013, the course had its first versions with the concept of Portuguese studied as a foreign language (Português Língua Estrangeira – PLE 2012/2013), and then as a language to be studied by foreigners (Língua Portuguesa para Estrangeiros – LPE 2014/2016 ). Based on the development of the course and the linguistic pedagogical experience of the professionals involved, since 2017 we have understood that Portuguese can be studied by all of those who have learned another native language, whether Brazilians or foreigners, such as indigenous people who speak other Brazilian tongues, members of the deaf community who speak Libras (Brazilian Sign Language) or people born in Brazil into foreign families (CPFOL).
Speakers of Portuguese as a native language or fluent speakers of Portuguese as an Additional Language (AL) can also seek to deepen their language skills in specific situations of use in different registers of formality. Therefore, we added the In-person Portuguese Course (CPP) to the program. Created in 2017 under the name “Portuguese for Academic Purposes” (CPPA), the current CPP seeks to structure itself for Linguistic Education in a broader way, considering new Literacy theories. The CPFOL and CPP are free, in-person courses, designed to meet internal and external demands at the university. These demands are prioritized for undergraduate and postgraduate students, civil servants, and members of the UFABC community in general, such as workers from outsourced companies, interns, etc., based on linguistic leveling consisting of test applications or interviews, aimed at directing candidates to the most appropriate classes according to their skills at the AL.
