Research at the Federal University of ABC covers a wide range of fields, reflecting the university’s commitment to interdisciplinary approaches and cutting-edge exploration. UFABC’s research activities contribute to advancing knowledge, fostering innovation, and addressing social challenges both in Brazil and globally. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and a commitment to excellence, UFABC researchers strive to make significant contributions to their respective fields and beyond. The following is an overview of some of the prominent research areas at UFABC:
- Science and Engineering: UFABC is known for its strong focus on science and engineering research. This includes studies in physics, chemistry, materials science, and engineering disciplines such as mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering. Research in these areas often involves collaboration with industry partners and other academic institutions to address real-world challenges.
- Biology and Biotechnology: UFABC researchers are engaged in various studies related to biology and biotechnology, including molecular biology, genetics, bioinformatics, and biophysics.
- Mathematics and Computer Science: The university has a vibrant community of mathematicians and computer scientists conducting research in areas such as applied mathematics, theoretical computer science, artificial intelligence, and data science.
- Social Sciences and Humanities: UFABC also fosters research in social sciences and humanities, encompassing disciplines such as sociology, anthropology, political science, philosophy, and history. Researchers explore topics ranging from social inequality and urban development to cultural heritage and political ideologies.
- Energy and Sustainability: Given the global challenges of climate change and energy sustainability, UFABC researchers are actively involved in studying renewable energy sources, energy efficiency, environmental conservation, and sustainable development.
- Nanotechnology and Materials Science: Nanotechnology and materials science are burgeoning fields with numerous applications in electronics, healthcare, and manufacturing. UFABC researchers investigate nanomaterials, nanodevices, and their properties to develop new technologies with enhanced functionalities and performance.
- Health Sciences: UFABC has a growing focus on health sciences research, encompassing areas such as biomedical engineering, pharmacology, and public health. Researchers collaborate with healthcare professionals and institutions to develop medical devices, drugs, and interventions that improve diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases.

Collaborating Researcher Program (CR)
The “UFABC Collaborating Researcher” program is the only institutional process that allows Brazilian or foreign researchers, without an employment relationship with UFABC, to carry out research on the university’s premises. The program aims to encourage scientific and technological research at the institution, enabling the contribution of external collaborators and the development of professionals who want to continue improving as researchers, obtaining a level of excellence in a given area of knowledge.
In addition to granting access to UFABC facilities, the program allows researchers to collaborate with teaching activities and supervision for undergraduate research students, as long as they hold a Doctorate and meet all pre-established requirements. The participation of a Collaborating Researcher (CR) with a scholarship or as a volunteer is permitted. The program is regulated by ConsUni Resolution No. 201, of November 27th, 2019, published in Service Bulletin No. 897, which establishes all the general standards.
How to participate
To participate in the UFABC Collaborating Researcher Program, you must complete the following steps:
Step 1: the interested party must look for a supervisor, a professor at UFABC, who will be jointly responsible with the researcher for their acts and activities within the institution. The supervisor must meet the criteria established in Article 6 of ConsUni Resolution No. 232/2023, of September 27th, 2023.
Step 2: the supervisor must request registration with the Dean of Research (Propes), sending the necessary documentation to the email cap.propes@ufabc.edu.br, using their institutional email. (See the list of required documents below.)
Step 3: Propes, upon receiving the documentation and the completed and signed form, will send an email to the Secretariat of the Center to which the supervisor is linked, informing and arranging for the researcher’s registration with the other spheres of UFABC.
Step 4: After receiving the confirmation email from Propes that the registration has been completed, the researcher must create a UFABC network login and institutional email.
Note 1: the researcher will be able to collect the CR badge from Propes according to the information contained in the registration confirmation email.
Note 2: Propes may issue a declaration of current registration at the researcher’s request.
Documentation for CR registration
I. Collaborating researcher registration form:
a) in the PDF version, containing all signatures;
b) in editable MS Word format (DOC or DOCX), without signatures.
Note: If laboratory infrastructure is used to develop the project, the registration form must also contain the signature of the laboratory coordinator in question.
II. Proof of registration of the research project on SIGAA, containing the researcher’s name as a member of the project.
III. Proof of registration of the research laboratory on SIGAA containing the researcher’s name as a member of the technical team.
- Manuals available in: Laboratory Module
IV. For researchers with a doctorate, an official copy of the doctoral diploma or certificate valid nationally.
V. For research fellows, copy of the grant award term or equivalent document. - VI. Ethical Statement of Awareness, by which the researcher reiterates that he/she is subject to the rules of the UFABC Code of Ethics and the sanctions provided for therein.
- Ethical Statement of Awareness (model)
- VII. Proof of the complete vaccination schedule (1st and 2nd vaccinations + booster; or single vaccination + booster). For proof purposes, the following documents will be accepted:
- a) National Covid-19 Vaccination Certificate issued by the “Conecte SUS” Platform, “Poupatempo Digital” or other official platforms; or
- b) Copy of vaccination proof or vaccination card printed on letterhead, issued at the time of vaccination by the health body or institution responsible for administering the vaccine.
