Social Inclusion

At UFABC, social inclusion is practiced both as an act of responsibility and reduction of inequality, as an active process of identification and development of talents, promotion of diversity and plurality of ideas.

From an inclusive perspective, and in its various levels, Education requires an interdisciplinary approach, involving different dimensions: political, legal, economic, cultural, technological and social. It is the responsibility, especially of public education, the embrace and development of inclusive education, aiming at the accessibility and surmounting several barriers that prevent equal opportunities: architectural, communicational, informational, methodological, instrumental, programmatic, and especially the attitudinal barrier.

In the Brazilian context, and in dealing with themes located at the frontier of scientific knowledge, UFABC was created to demonstrate that it is possible to reconcile the necessary social inclusion with the search for academic excellence, and that the quality of research can be democratically compatible with society’s pressing demands for inclusion and social responsibility.

Sports & Recreation

UFABC acts to guarantee that every member of our community has access to sport and recreation. by promoting activities related to gymnastics, dance and sports. Aligned to this view, initiatives lead by students are highly encouraged.
At the moment, the University has two sports courts in Santo André Campus and three sand courts in São Bernardo do Campo Campus for use of all academic community. There is also a multi-sport gym in the final stage of construction in Santo André Campus.
UFABC also organizes activities with a positive impact on the well-being and health of the practitioners, such as Pilates classes.



UFABC is highly involved in actions to assist students with disabilities. In addition to the quota system for the undergraduate selection process, UFABC also adopted a series of measures capable of creating a protective network for students with disabilities.
Inclusive practices incorporated in our academic routine allow the students to enjoy the services offered by the University. Students with differentiated educational demands are able to, for example, request additional time to perform academic tasks, adapt courseware to their conditions and use inclusive monitoring service.
There is also a wide range of technological resources available to these students, such as, portable electronic magnifier, video magnifier, voice scanner, braille printer, etc. These tools prevent this group from being left out of the learning process.
UFABC also provides service of translators and interpreters of the Brazilian Sign Language, rained professionals assistance, lectures and academic events, as well as, producing content for video lectures.
The accessibility condition in UFABC is under supervision of the Accessibility Center. Established in 2014, it supports teachers, promotes internal and external courses, tracks the student needs, and manages inclusive monitoring services.
At the end of 2016, a University created an Affirmative Policy Commission (CPAF), responsible for monitoring and proposing actions to improve UFABC’s affirmative policies, among other tasks.


University Restaurants

The University Restaurant menus are prepared under the nutritionist supervision, offering to students and employees balanced and nutritious meals. The price charged to students at the University Restaurant is subsidized by the University, reducing the amount they spend on food.


Affirmative Actions

UFABC adopts the quota system in the selection process for undergraduate programs in order to collaborate in the fight against the historical Brazilian social injustice in higher education. Its objective is to guarantee equal conditions in the dispute for a vacancy in one of our Interdisciplinary Bachelor’s program. Thus, we contribute to reduce the impact of social inequality providing access to quality public higher education in Brazil.
Social inclusion is a daily challenge for us. The Federal Law of Quotas guarantee vacancies to students socially disadvantaged and to ethnic minority classes in public universities, in a very similar way to the pioneer model adopted at UFABC when the institution was established. Years later, on our own initiative, we created quotas for people with disabilities. UFABC plans to offer 4% of the total vacancies to students with disabilities in the 2018 selection process.
At UFABC, half of the vacancies are destined for public high school students. In the range of students coming from public education, 50% of the vacancies are reserved for students with per capita family income of up to 1,5 minimum wage. The range also includes the quota for ethnicity of the self-declared black, brown or indigenous candidate (quota PPI).
Social inequities, although mitigated, are not only solved by ensuring the access to the university for previously excluded portions of the population. Once at the University, the student socially vulnerable must be able to carry on his studies. Therefore, there is a need for the Financial Aids granted by UFABC.
One of them, the Housing Assistance, provides stability for students coming from locations far from the campi locations.
The Stability Aid was established with the objective of providing the minimum conditions for students to adapt and dedicate themselves to teaching, research and extension activities.
Another way to combat evasion and to collaborate to the stability of the social vulnerable student is the Food Aid, which fully subsidizes the student’s meal at the University Restaurants;
The Transport Aid helps the students’ locomotion by public transportation;
Childcare Allowance is to support day-care expenses of students with infants.


Human rights

The PROAP Human Rights Coordination was created in September 2016 and is responsible for implementing human rights policies at the University by encouraging and disseminating practices that recognize the diversity of gender, race and sexual orientation, as well as respect for the rights of vulnerable people and prevention and eradication of forms of discrimination, intolerance and violence against minorities.
The coordination works in two strategic dimensions: human rights promotion and protection. In the protective dimension, the coordination counts with a psychosocial team which offers individual and groups counseling. The psychosocial team scope also includes areas such as health, multidisciplinary care of violence situations, social assistance, among others.
In the scope of human rights promotion, the coordination activities are linked to the stimulation and materialization of human rights research; campaigns and actions combating forms of discrimination and violence; reducing inequalities and promoting equity in order to reduce vulnerabilities of socially disadvantaged groups.
